A Happier Place
For Karen
By
Geoffrey Zimmerman
You told me you were going away
“I wont’ tell you where,” you said
“Where I can never be followed again”
“Where I can be myself, again”
It’s been over a week
And I think of you every day
I can call your mom and learn the truth
But I prefer to imagine
That you’re on the beach
With a tall drink in your hand
Living the life you’ve always imagined
Smiling at the sunrise and sunset
And happy again
Are you with your loving brother
That you adored?
I know he left you too soon
He would tell you to wait
Not to rush to his side
There’s too much beauty, still, he would say
I don’t want to know
I prefer to believe that you’re sitting pretty
In a happier place
